How to Clean Up the Crust on a Two-Tube Washing Machine

This is the article from my job with Stargaze in projects.co.id where I translated his Indonesian article to English.

The two-Tube washing machine is very identical with the type of washing machine top loading, this type of washing machine has a tube mouth on the above like picture number 1.

In this type of washing machine, plastic is the main material so it will be vulnerable to crust like shown in picture 2. This can happen due to residual detergents that is not cleaned properly.

The crust can be easily build up if the owner does not flush or wipe the washing machine after being used, it can also happen if the washing machine is old. As a result, the remaining detergents will stick on the machine and build up into crust.

Besides that, keeping the inner or outer part of the washing machine wet even after being done using it will also trigger the crust to show up. This can make the washing machine look dirty and even make the tube wall rotten from inside.

Here is how you can clean up the crust in a two-tube washing machine:

Using Bleach

This method is being recommended by one of the famous washing machine manufacturers from Japan. It turns out that bleach can be used to clean the crust on the tube wall, either because of the user’s fault or because of old age. The owner can use the following method:

  • Put a warm water inside the tube, make sure all the crust are drowned in.

  • Add enough bleach.

  • Turn the machine on so the hot water and bleach are mixing well together.

  • Wait for a while until the crust peel off.

  • Rinse with clean water and brush the remaining crust using cloth then rinse it again.

Clean It Using Baking Soda and vVnegar

Here’s how to do it:

  • Put a warm water inside the tube, make sure all the crust are drowned in.

  • Fill in 60 gram of baking soda and 750ml of vinegar inside it.

  • Turn on the machine so all of them are mixing together.

  • Wait for at least 30 minutes until the crust peel off.

  • Rinse with clean water and brush the remaining crust using cloth then rinse it again.

How to Prevent the Crust from Showing up Again

Prevention is your best partner to fight off the crust from happening again. Here’s how you can prevent it:

  • Always rinse the big tube with clean water. Make sure there are not detergent residue left.

  • Wipe the wet big tube wall with a piece of cloth until it’s really dried off. Beside the detergent, water can also create a crust. Even though you already wipe it clean, the tube is usually still wet that’s why you should not close the tube, instead let it open for 15-30 minutes so it will be truly dried.

  • Applied the same method to the small tube, but you need to use a new piece cloth (do not use the same one you use earlier) and also to let it open for 15-30 minutes to dried out.

  • After done washing, pick up the clothes as soon as you can. Wet and moist clothes can create another crust in the tube wall.

  • Always wipe it clean and thoroughly, either the inner or outer part of the machine. Crust can appear anywhere on the machine. As long as there is water residue, the crust will show up.

  • Place the washing machine in dry place. Moist is also the main factor for the crust to show up.

Those are some steps that can be used to treat and clean a two-tube washing machine from the yellow crust.

Keep in mind that yellow crust can occur not only due to user negligence but also due to age. At least, doing the prevention can slow down the growth rate of the yellow crust either on the body of the washing machine or on the inside of the tub.
